Sometimes we're aware of why we feel or behave in certain ways. For example, we know that we emotionally withdraw in relationships when someone hurts our feelings. We're usually able to describe why this happens, and work through it by talking to someone.
But what if we don’t know why we feel sad, anxious, afraid or paralyzed? What if we experience localized pain, numbness or other unexplained symptoms? In these situations, talk therapy can have limited effectiveness.
Brainspotting therapy is a powerful, brain-body therapy that helps to resolve stuck emotions, thoughts or body sensations that persist despite talk therapy and other treatments.
Brainspotting works by identifying, processing and releasing the core sources of emotional pain, body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting differs from other trauma therapies in that a traumatic event does not need to be discussed, or even identified, for healing to occur. This is especially important when treating an infant or child.
When a client (adult or child) is able to allow the presence of difficult emotions, thoughts or sensations in a safe, relationally-attuned space, these emotions/thoughts/sensations are able to move through the body and the nervous system. Patients often feel lighter, more confident, and in most instances, experience an immediate reduction in their symptoms that is sustained over time.
