What is HeartMath®?

For more than 30 years, the HeartMath Institute has been researching the heart-brain connection and learning how the heart and emotions influence our physical and mental health. They, and others, have discovered that emotions are constantly informing the nervous system and the body, altering hormone levels, digestive function, brain function and heart rhythm patterns. 


HeartMath techniques and heart rate variability biofeedback help you recognize when you're dysregulated, and teach you techniques to harness the self-empowering skills of emotional and physiological regulation for the treatment of trauma and other causes of nervous system dysregulation.

HeartMath Techniques

HeartMath's self-regulation techniques are a unique combination of breathing exercise and emotional awareness that helps to shift the nervous system away from dysregulation and towards a state of regulation, or "coherence". These are simple techniques that any child or adult can use in the moment to reduce feelings of fear or anxiety, increase mental clarity, and improve social connection. Over time, these techniques can help to rewire the nervous system, providing a greater capacity for emotional regulation and resilience.
